Podcasts are listened to on a regular basis by 3.7 million adults in the UK, or approximately 6.5% of the adult population in Britain. Thanks to the ubiquity of our phones, people can consume information anywhere and at any time – whether you are sat on the Central line or running on a treadmill at the gym!
Figures from the same study show that 57% of podcast listeners choose their smartphone, 16% opt for laptops, 15% prefer digital music players and 8% are going with their tablets. 42% of listeners do so while commuting and 34% do so while they relax and do nothing other than focus on the content!
Access to podcasts has also been greatly facilitated by the fact that Spotify and Apple Music allow you to stream podcast content and new episodes via their services.
The number of download requests has also rocketed – to 2.6bn in 2014 from 1.6bn in 2012; suggesting a strong and ongoing pattern of growth. Remember when some analysts believed that podcasts had reached their saturation peak in 2011?!
